A spin-off company from Imperial College London has developed a new sensor system to monitor people's health and send diagnoses to a computer. The first human trials will begin in a few months.

This digital band-aid measures only three millimeters by five and has a silicon chip that carries sensors capable of detecting various symptoms. One can detect heart activity, another body temperature, and another blood sugar levels. All the information collected is processed by the Sensium silicon chip whose power source is a small battery, similar to those found in digital clocks.

The information can be transmitted from the device via mobile phone or PDA to a database configured to detect results considered abnormal. The computer can alert the patient, their relatives or their doctor to the appearance of worrying results.

Spokesmen for Toumaz, the company that created this digital band-aid, say that a motion sensor could also be incorporated, to alert elderly people to falls.

However, this new method of medical sensors has to undergo various tests before being launched on the market.
